Press release addressed to Bulgarians and all others
On the weekend of 8-10 July, the Smârda district becomes the meeting point in Giurgiu for the return of the Danube Days 2022 festival. We look forward to giving due recognition to the historic Smârda district and its heritage with a programme full of tours, workshops and community activities!
This year, Giurgiu is back #FacingtheDanube. It is said that Danube towns are located either facing or facing away from the Danube, depending on the orientation of the neighbourhoods. However, we believe that there is also a social element, namely the way in which the city opens up its local heritage for others to discover, celebrate and protect.
The Smârda neighbourhood invites everyone from Giurgiu, Ruse, Bucharest and all those interested to discover, through a series of activities, the history of the place, the local community, the stories collected over generations and the prospects for the future:
– Photo exhibition with the past and present of the neighbourhood – Smârda “Then and now”;
– Community meetings with storytelling and revitalisation of the landscape “La Bordei”;
– Guided walks and mapping of Smârda neighbourhood with everyone’s participation;
– Film screenings, presentations, creative workshops for children and adults.
We especially invite our neighbours from Ruse to see the other side of Giurgiu by discovering the history of the Smârda neighbourhood during a guided tour in English on Sunday 10 July at 11.00. We will start in the centre of Smârda, in Orient Park, walk through the neighbourhood and discover everything from the site of the former sugar factory to the last hut in Giurgiu, which is now transformed into a community centre.
After the tour, we invite you to join us for an ad-hoc picnic in the park in front of the former sugar factory at 13:00 and enjoy the antique fair and open market organized by the local community.

The Giurgiu #FacingTheDanube project is organized by the “Urban Transition Association” within the framework of the #DANUrB+ urban regeneration programme co-financed by the European Union. The project is organized in partnership with the Faculty of Urbanism of the Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism – Bucharest and the Municipality of Giurgiu, with the active participation of the local community of Giurgiu.
