On 19 April 2026 Bulgaria heads to the polls again for early parliamentary elections, in a country voting for the eighth time in just five years. To some, this seems like just another episode in Sofia’s political crisis. For Bulgarians in the Republic of Moldova, however, it is by no means mere background noise. The Bulgarian state is opening ten polling stations in Moldova, from Chișinău and Taraclia to Comrat, Cahul, Tvardița, and Ceadîr-Lunga. This is not a bureaucratic formality; it is proof that Sofia knows very well that southern Moldova is not a folkloric outpost, but a living part of its civic and political body.
In fact, the stakes are higher than simply the right to vote for Bulgarian citizens in the Republic of Moldova. Around Taraclia and the Bulgarian communities in southern Moldova, three realities converge that, for some, still seem incompatible: Bulgarian identity, Moldovan citizenship, and a European horizon, represented in part by Bulgarian citizenship. Yet they are not mutually exclusive. On the contrary. Over the past year, officials from Chișinău and Sofia have discussed the benefits of Moldova’s accession to the European Union right here in Taraclia, and Bulgarian diplomats have described the Bulgarian community in Moldova as a natural bridge between the two states. In other words, Bulgarians in the Republic of Moldova are not at Europe’s doorstep. They are already in its historical and institutional antechamber.
That is precisely why these elections must also be viewed through the lens of integrity. Bulgaria is not entering the 19 April vote with clean hands and a lesson in democracy learned. Bulgarian authorities have already reported over 1,000 electoral violations and more than 180 arrests ahead of the vote, while anti-corruption experts estimate that 10% to 15% of votes may remain vulnerable to manipulation, through direct buying or via local influence networks. Relevant organizations have sent an observation mission to monitor campaign financing, hybrid threats, and the conduct of the vote, and interim Prime Minister Andrei Gyurov has called for zero tolerance for fraud. That says it all. Sunday’s election is not just any election, but one about minimal trust in an EU member state.
And for the Republic of Moldova, there is also a toxic precedent, which makes any naivety impossible. In July 2021, representatives of the “BSP for Bulgaria” coalition reported vote-buying at the polling station in Comrat, claiming that voters were brought in by bus and received 500 Moldovan lei in cash each. At the same time, cases of ballot photos being taken were also reported at polling stations in Taraclia, Comrat, Ceadîr-Lunga, and Vulcănești, and the complaints were sent to the Central Election Commission (CEC), the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Bulgarian Embassy in Chișinău. A few months later, the media in Chișinău noted, citing the Bulgarian press, the strange surge in DPS votes in Moldova—namely, from just 2 votes in April 2021 to 518 votes in July 2021—alongside public reports of vote-buying. In 2022, the investigative publication Bivol wrote again about reports in Comrat, Ceadîr-Lunga, and Taraclia and stated that local police had confirmed the existence of a report and an ongoing investigation. We do not know how many of these incidents resulted in final convictions. We do know, however, something serious enough, namely that the precedent exists.
That is why, for the Bulgarians in the Republic of Moldova, the vote on April 19 should not be treated as a sentimental trip to their historical homeland, but as a simple test of civic dignity. It is not normal for a respectable, long-established, educated, and well-integrated community in southern Moldova to be reduced, with every tense Bulgarian election, to a pawn for electoral brokers, minibuses, phones with photos of ID cards, and money handed out at the corner of the polling station. If the Bulgarian state opens ten polling stations in Moldova, then it must also defend the integrity of these stations, not just count them in the statistics. And if Bulgarian politicians want votes from Taraclia, Comrat, or Tvardița, they must earn them, not buy them.
Taraclia, in this whole picture, is not just a sentimental border town. It is the symbolic and institutional center of the Bulgarians in the Republic of Moldova. Official data show that ethnic Bulgarians account for approximately 2% of Moldova’s population, and Bulgarian as a native language is studied by nearly 5,000 students in 25 educational institutions. In Taraclia, Bulgarians form the ethnic majority, comprising about two-thirds of the district’s population, according to census data. It is no coincidence that Bulgarian officials have repeatedly insisted that Taraclia must remain the center of the ethnic Bulgarian community in the Republic of Moldova. When you say “Taraclia,” you are referring to identity, education, local administration, and community memory—not just a dot on the map.
This is where the strategic dimension of the elections in Sofia comes into play. Bulgaria has officially reaffirmed, including at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that maintaining Taraclia as a separate administrative-territorial unit remains a priority objective for Sofia. At the same time, in March 2026, consultations on local public administration reform took place in Taraclia, during which the Moldovan government presented a reorganization plan intended, in its view, to reduce bureaucracy and strengthen services, while local leaders warned of the risk of losing administrative autonomy and diluting cultural identity. It is precisely at such moments that we see what kind of Bulgaria will emerge from the 19 April vote: one that defends the community through European dialogue and institutional solutions, or one that turns it into a tool for geopolitical agitation.
If pro-European forces gain strength in Sofia, the benefit for Taraclia and for Bulgarians in the Republic of Moldova will not be abstract, but very concrete. In July 2025, Prime Ministers Dorin Recean and Rosen Zhelyazkov visited Taraclia and discussed with local authorities the development of the Bulgarian community and the benefits of Moldova’s accession to the EU. The government in Chișinău listed recent investments in the district—water pipelines, roads, schools, and a hospital—while the Bulgarian side was involved in infrastructure and education projects. It was also confirmed there that the university in Taraclia would be transformed into a branch of Angel Kanchev University in Ruse—the first Bulgarian higher education institution opened outside of Bulgaria—offering instruction in Bulgarian, Romanian, and English, along with scholarships and degrees recognized throughout Europe. The Bulgarian Embassy in Chișinău separately funds projects for Bulgarian community organizations, ranging from education and culture to media and heritage. This is what a European Sofia looks like. Fewer slogans about “brothers across the border” and more institutions that keep them close to Europe.
Moreover, the European Union itself has symbolically and practically come down to Taraclia. In April 2025, over a hundred residents of the region participated in a discussion with the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova about European funds, infrastructure, and preserving the cultural identity of the Bulgarian community. The Bulgarian ambassador spoke then about the lessons learned by Bulgarian rural communities during EU accession. In other words, for Taraclia, Europe does not just mean geopolitics and blue flags, but money for roads, education, better administration, and the chance for Bulgarian identity not to be preserved in a jar, but lived out in a developing region.
And this brings us to the uncomfortable question: what kind of Bulgaria will emerge from the polls? Regional media report that former President Rumen Radev, described as a pro-Russian figure, leads in the polls and criticizes both Bulgaria’s entry into the eurozone and the security agreement with Ukraine, advocating for the restoration of relations with Moscow. In contrast, interim Prime Minister Gyurov has reaffirmed that Bulgaria’s pro-Western orientation is a core value and a strategic commitment.
The difference is not merely one of nuance. For Bulgarians in the Republic of Moldova, a Sofia anchored in the EU and NATO means an advocate for Moldova’s EU accession, a partner that shares negotiating experience, and a state that defends its historical communities through rules, not through hysteria. An ambiguous Sofia, seduced by sovereignist rhetoric and the restoration of relations with Russia, could relativize and minimize precisely these commitments. Not automatically, but enough to sow uncertainty.
And yes, it would also be good for Bulgaria itself for a pro-EU stance to prevail in Sofia. The country has just joined the eurozone in January 2026, and the interim authorities are insisting on predictability, economic stability, and the defense of democratic order. Bulgaria does not need to become yet another Balkan laboratory for geopolitical ambiguity, contempt for institutions, and tolerance of vote-buying. It needs real reform, trust in elections, and a political class that understands that Europe is not the enemy of national identity, but the only framework within which this identity can thrive without being hijacked by corruption or Eastern propaganda.
For Taraclia, for the Bulgarians in the Republic of Moldova, and for Bulgaria itself, 19 April is not just about who wins the most seats in parliament. It is about who defends the idea that Bulgarian identity and European identity do not clash, but rather reinforce one another east of the Prut River.
