The Bulgarian minority in Romania is marking an important moment: in the village of Izvoarele, Teleorman County – a locality with Bulgarian roots dating back over 200 years – The Bulgarian Inn, a Local Gastronomic Spot, has officially opened, thus joining the national gastronomic network. The initiative brings to the fore the culinary culture, language, costumes, and traditions of Bulgaria, carefully preserved by the local community.
About The Bulgarian inn
Coordinated by Bianca Vasile, the Bulgarian Inn is the first Bulgarian ethnic gastronomic point in Romania and represents a symbol of the identity and cultural continuity of the Bulgarian ethnic group that settled here at the beginning of the 19th century.
“This achievement is important for us, but also for all Bulgarians who want to know that their traditions live on in Izvoarele,” says the project coordinator.
The opening of the restaurant gives the community new visibility and creates a space where visitors – including those from Bulgaria – can taste traditional Bulgarian dishes, prepared according to old recipes passed down from generation to generation.
“We want to promote traditional dishes – recipes inherited from our grandmothers and mothers, passed down from generation to generation. It is a responsibility, but above all a great joy and honor,” added the project coordinator.
The Bulgarian Inn means much more than just gastronomy. Here, guests can hear the old Bulgarian language spoken in the community, see the traditional costumes specific to the village, and learn stories about the history of the Bulgarians who came to Teleorman two centuries ago.
The name of the Local Gastronomic Point is a tribute to the former mansion of boyar Petre Iliescu, known in Izvoarele as “La Han (At the inn),” a meeting place for villagers and surrounding communities. Although the building no longer exists, its spirit is reborn through culinary workshops, tastings, cultural meetings, and themed events dedicated to the local Bulgarian heritage, organized at 85 Morii Street in the commune.
The Bulgarian Inn is an open invitation to anyone who wants to discover how Bulgarians in the village of Izvoarele live, cook, speak, and celebrate their identity, becoming a bridge between Bulgaria and Romania.
Meals by reservation only, for small groups
At the Bulgarian Inn, meals are served exclusively by reservation and are intended for groups of up to 12 people. The menu is set together with the host and is adjusted according to the season, the preferences of the guests, and the inspiration of the local cuisine, thus offering each meal a unique and personalized experience. Whether they choose a complex lunch or a relaxing dinner, visitors can enjoy the tranquility of the village, the coolness of the Gaurici Valley, and the authentic flavor of traditional dishes.
