The race between Ruse and Giurgiu, which unites people across borders

The Free Spirit Run “Ruse-Giurgiu” is one of the most unique sporting events in the region. For eight years, it has brought together hundreds of runners from different countries who cross one of the symbols of cross-border cooperation – the Friendship Bridge. We discuss the specifics of the organization, the challenges, and the excitement surrounding the race with its founder, Evgeni Ignatov, president of the Danube Athletics Club and municipal councilor in Ruse. He explained that there are still places available for participation. Registration is open until September 22, 2025, on the event website.

Mr. Ignatov, the Ruse-Giurgiu race is a unique event. What makes it so special?

It is probably the only competition in Europe that actually crosses an international bridge and connects two cities and two countries – Ruse and Giurgiu. The start is on the Romanian side and the finish is in Bulgaria, so every year we symbolically cross borders without barriers, but with sport and friendship.

What kind of participants does the race attract?

We have competitors from over ten nationalities—Bulgarians, Romanians, Poles, Ukrainians, English, Africans. Both professionals and amateurs come. It is important for us to create an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome. We have runners who have been participating since the first edition, as well as new enthusiasts every year.

What is the place of elite competitors in the race?

The prize fund is substantial – between 7 and 8 thousand euros, which attracts good runners. But our main focus is on amateurs and the social aspect – people who do sports, have fun, and feel a sense of belonging. We are not pursuing commercialism, but sporting and human values.

Challenges

The organization also involves serious logistical challenges, especially around the Friendship Bridge. How do you cope with this?

Yes, there are always difficulties with closures and traffic, especially during repairs. But we work with the Bulgarian and Romanian authorities in advance to minimize inconvenience. Traffic is usually stopped for about half an hour so that the column of runners can pass safely. We have excellent cooperation with the border authorities in both cities. In addition, the organization of the event is a joint effort between the two municipalities and the sports managers in Ruse and Giurgiu. In this regard, our interaction is also excellent.

How are you doing with sponsors and funding?

On the Bulgarian side, we benefit from the support of the municipality, the Ministry of Sport, and companies we have been working with for years. We are trying to attract international companies in the field of sporting goods. Sometimes we even share resources with our colleagues in Giurgiu to ensure that the race runs smoothly.

Importance for society

How important are volunteers to the organization?

Extremely important. We have dozens of volunteers – school and university students who help distribute starter packs, medals, and with logistics. For them, it’s a valuable experience, and for us, it’s invaluable help. Without volunteers, such an event would be impossible. The volunteers are part of the youth center in Ruse.

Can we say that the Free Spirit Race is already a tradition?

Absolutely. Since 2016, with a short break due to the coronavirus crisis, every fall the bridge between Ruse and Giurgiu becomes a stage for sports, friendship, and cooperation. Although the political and administrative leadership changes, we have always had support because everyone understands that this is a celebration for the people.

How do you see the future of the race?

I think there is still great potential – more participants from Romania, better media coverage, a stronger community around the event. But the most important thing is to keep the spirit alive—to show that sport unites and that we can truly cross borders together.
