Interview with Radio Varna regarding the heightened level of escalation in the Black Sea
Radio Varna
Radio Varna is Bulgaria’s first regional radio station and one of the most authoritative voices on Bulgarian airwaves. As part of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) family, the station has been a key source of news, culture and music for residents and visitors to the Black Sea coast and north-eastern Bulgaria.
It all began in early 1934 thanks to the enthusiasm of local radio enthusiasts, and the official launch took place on 9 December 1934 with a memorable five-hour concert. Shortly afterwards, by decree of Tsar Boris III, radio broadcasting in the country became state-owned, making Radio Varna the second pillar of public radio in Bulgaria after Sofia. From its modest beginnings with just 34 gramophone records, the station now possesses a vast and priceless audio archive.
Radio Varna broadcasts a 24-hour independent programme that perfectly combines the dynamism of the news with the emotion of music. Its coverage extends across the entire coastline – from Rezovo to Durankulak – as well as the regions of Varna, Dobrich, Burgas, Shumen and Silistra.
