Its artistic manager Ivan Kyurkchiev briefly introduced the opera and its plans for international cooperation in the autumn

Ivan Kyurkchiev, the former director of the Ruse State Opera, is the artistic manager of the Bucharest National Opera from April 2022. The Bridge of Friendship blog contacted him about his activities there, its international and Bulgarian-Romanian dimension. Here is what he sent us:

“The Bucharest National Opera is a very strong opera house in musical and artistic quality with an incredible choir, a wonderful orchestra, ballet, soloists and technical services. I am impressed by the extremely high musical quality of the performances and concerts that were done last season.

At the celebration of the centenary of the Bucharest National Opera, all the state opera houses from all over Romania, the operas from Timisoara, Cluj-Napoca, Constanța, Iasi, Brasov, Craiova, Chisinau and the Ruse Opera were invited to perform on the stage of the Bucharest Opera House. Their performances showed the high quality of Romanian opera culture and the attitude of the Romanian state towards opera theatres and audiences. Each of these opera theatres came with their own opera production and performed in front of the metropolitan audience in Bucharest and all of this was organized and paid for by the Romanian Ministry of Culture.

This year, in July, we had a great success at the first edition of the Festival in Orebic near Dubrovnik, where the Artistic Director is the Argentine tenor José Cura, with gala concerts: Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Verdi’s Requiem.

The organizers were very pleased with the artistic level of the NBO and we have an invitation for next year where we will expand and have in addition to the concerts also opera performances.

On the 3rd of September 2022 we will have a special concert. Bucharest National Opera will come to Bulgaria for the first time with their production of Rigoletto. It will perform at the Opera Festival on Tsarevets Hill in Veliko Tarnovo. On October 27, 2022 we will do a big Opera Gala on the occasion of the opening of the Bulgarian National Press Club in Bucharest of the BTA. Orchestra, choir and soloists from NBO and Bulgaria will participate. Again in October, the Bucharest National Opera Ballet will have a tour in Belgium with Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.”
