Călin Georgescu, who was Romania’s presidential candidate, was detained and questioned this week. This after dozens of people close to him were searched. Romanian prosecutors say they have opened a criminal investigation against Georgescu, who came first in the canceled first round of the presidential election.
It is very interesting what investigators have found in these searches. It is also curious what will be the consequences of all these things that are happening to Georgescu at the moment, because Romania is facing elections. We will now bring in Vladimir Mitev, a journalist from the Bulgarian-Romanian blog The Bridge of Friendship.
Hello, Mr. Mitev. Let’s start with what investigators found in these searches. There is information, including weapons, including huge sums of money.
And if anything of what the investigators are finding at the moment implicates Georgescu in links to Russia and the Kremlin, what are the main suspicions about him. Good morning.
Good morning. Indeed, weapons have been discovered in the hideouts of some of the people closest to Georgescu. Huge sums of money were also found.
The important thing is that the charges against him are very serious. They are, for example, actions and incitement to change the constitutional order.
It is about the fact that he has declared false data for a long time in various statements. Which, as I understand it, has to do with his participation in the elections. He stated that he had 0 lei budget for his campaign. This of course surprised many people. And in the end it has now come out that he in fact sought funding for his campaign, including from a businessman who has had a very dubious reputation over the years.
So the allegations are quite serious. I think it means that the state has somehow decided to take action against him, despite the fact that the Trump administration and people close to Trump are expressing support for him.
And it remains to be seen whether he will actually go through with it. Meaning whether he will be barred from running in the election. Or, rather, is something being done in part, which, if done only in part, according to some comments, will encourage his supporters to push harder for their interests.
Yes, and get even more support. Which businessman did Georgescu ask for help? The money that was found – somewhere I saw €900,000, somewhere I saw €1.5 million.
Is there any explanation for this money? And yes, in the end what do you expect to happen? Could it be banned at the election?
What I saw will be put under judicial control. I don’t know what that means in Romanian law.
Judicial control in his case means there are restrictions. For example, he can’t leave the country, he has to notify the authorities if he changes his domicile. And other restrictions, including that he is not allowed to create social media accounts and post anti-Semitic content. For example, far-right and racist in nature.
But he can participate in elections, right?
He will be banned from standing in the elections if he’s convicted. At the moment he is only charged. But I think there are indications that he won’t run.
We see that immediately after the elections in Germany, the Romanian state took action against Georgescu. This information has been gathered against him for a long time. And when it was felt that there was a certain balance of forces at European level, particularly in Germany, the Romanian authorities, in this case the prosecutor’s office, probably felt that their backs were being protected from Germany, and some action was taken.
We will have to see in the coming weeks. First, there will be a big protest on Saturday. We have to see how big it will be. To what extent do his supporters really support, regardless of these allegations, regardless of these revelations, support Georgescu and not somebody else. And we also have to see the U.S. administration – how it will respond.
Ilon Musk has already had various publications in X and so he draws attention to the fact that undemocratic actions are taking place in Romania.
Yes. He wrote in X that the person who got the most votes in Romania was arrested. That is appalling. This is one of Elon Musk’s publications.
It should be mentioned here that JD Vance, the American vice president, also mentioned the case in Romania and Georgescu during the Munich conference. But in the end, since you say that one of the charges against Georgescu is that of trying to change the constitutional order, does all this mean that the Romanian authorities are not only investigating Georgescu, but they should investigate a network, because this is not just a task of changing the constitutional order. Correct?
Yes. From what I understand, the network and the people whose homes are being searched are linked to what in Romania is called neo-legionarism, that is, people who in some way express a prejudice and are supporters of a movement that was far-right in Romania in the inter-war period. And it is important that a large number of these people are military mercenaries.
They served, for example, in the French Foreign Legion or in Africa. Recently, there were incidents in Central Africa. Some of them have been there.
So they are people who know how to handle weapons and they have their own philosophy, which it seems that part of the Romanian state, which also owns these institutions, the prosecutor’s office and so on, sees as anti-state.
Vladimir, thank you very much for these clarifications. We continue to follow events in Romania. They are very interesting and certainly very symptomatic. Thank you. We will see and hear from you again.
